The CFPB Proposes to Extend the Prepaid Accounts Final Rule Deadline

The CFPB recently proposed moving the effective date of the Prepaid Accounts Final Rule from October 1, 2017 to April 1, 2018. This delay will not affect the requirement, found in Regulation E, to submit prepaid account agreements to the CFPB by October 1, 2018.

The CFPB believes that this delay could help the industry address certain packaging related issues for prepaid accounts that are sold at retail locations. The CFPB seeks comment on whether it should extend the deadline, whether the six month extension is adequate, and whether the CFPB should delay the effective date of the agreement submission requirement as well. Comments are due to the CFPB by April 5, 2017.
