FFIEC Publishes 2022 HMDA Data on Mortgage Lending

The Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) recently released the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) data for mortgage lending transactions in 2022.  The publically-accessible data, which includes information filed by 4,460 U.S. financial institutions, can be accessed on FFIEC’s HMDA platform.

The data, which has been modified by the CFPB to protect consumer privacy, provides certain applicant information, information about the property securing the loan or proposed to secure the loan in the case of non-originated applications, the transaction, and other loan-level data points.  The 2022 HMDA data uses the census tract delineations, population, and housing characteristic data from the 2020 Census, and reflects metropolitan statistical area (MSA) definitions released by the Office of Management and Budget in 2020 that became effective for HMDA purposes in 2021.

In the CFPB’s Summary of the 2022 HMDA data, the Bureau cautions against comparing HMDA data across multiple years due to, among other things, changes in HMDA definitions, values, and thresholds, as well as changes in MSA and census tract boundaries.

Among the many data points highlighted by the Summary, the CFPB notes that, for 2022, the number of reporting institutions increased by about 2.8 percent from the previous year, and the data includes information on 14.3 million home loan applications, 8.4 million of which resulted in loan originations.  The CFPB also states that the total number of originated closed-end loans decreased by about 7.0 million (roughly 50.7 percent) between 2021 and 2022.
